Joe Torre tabs R.A. Dickey for Team USA opener in WBC

R.A. Dickey will take his knuckleball to the international stage in the World Baseball Classic. According to Yahoo! columnist Jeff Passan, Joe Torre has tabbed Dickey for the opening game against Mexico on Friday.

Dickey's new teammate, J.P. Arencibia, will start behind the plate for Team USA. Following a 2012 season where Dickey became the first knuckleball pitcher in history to win the Cy Young award with the Mets, he was shipped from Flushing to Toronto for top prospects Travis d'Arnaud, Noah Syndergaard and catcher John Buck.

Dickey struck out 230 batters in 233.2 innings while posting a minuscule 1.05 WHIP and 2.73 ERA for the Mets en route to the 2012 Cy Young Award.

Team USA begins Pool D play on Friday night in Arizona against Team Mexico at 9:00 p.m. EST.
