Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit could miss the 2013 season after rupturing his left Achilles tendon during Saturday’s opener against Toronto.

According to Province beat writer Marc Weber, DeMerit tore his tendon only six minutes into the match after leaping for a header. The Whitecaps would go on to win 1-0 over Toronto in the opener.

DeMerit will have surgery and be in a cast for four to six weeks with an expected recovery time from six to eight months. The Whitecaps captain could conceivably be ready for action in September.

DeMerit started in Whitecaps FC first-ever MLS playoff game where they were eliminated by the defending-champion LA Galaxy. DeMerit was also the first Whitecaps player ever to appear in the MLS All-Star game.

The 33-year-old defender is in the final year of a three-year pact with the Vancouver Whitecaps.
