Jeff Jackson resigns as Furman basketball coach

Jeff Jackson has resigned as the Furman men's basketball coach, according to a statement from the school.

WSPA 7 TV reported Jackson was stepping down Thursday.

Furman went 85-131 during Jackson's seven-year tenure. The Palladins finished 7-24 this past season and 3-15 in the Southern Conference. Jackson's highpoint was a 22-win season in 2010-11, after which Furman gained a berth in the CollegeInsider.com tournament. It was Furman's first postseason appearance since 1991.

“We respect Coach Jackson's decision to resign and pursue other career opportunities, whether in coaching or other areas,” Furman athletic director Gary Clark said in a statement. “We appreciate the manner in which he has represented Furman University and Furman athletics. He has recruited quality young men who have performed in the classroom and represented Furman with class on the basketball court. We wish Coach Jackson all the best in his future endeavors.”

Clark named assistant coach Bob Richey the team's interim coach during the school's search for Jackson's replacement.
