Report: Angels' Ryan Madson feels soreness after simulated game

After pitching against live batters for the first time since undergoing Tommy John surgery last March, Los Angeles Angels reliever Ryan Madson said his elbow feels sore and is not optimistic about returning soon, according to FoxSports.com's Ken Rosenthal.

Madson, who was shut down early on in spring training due to struggles in his recovery, faced four batters in a simulated game on Friday, throwing 20-30 pitches and an additional 20 in the bullpen, according to MLB.com.

The 32-year-old right-hander signed an incentive-laden, one-year, $3.5-million deal and was expected to serve as the Angels' closer. He missed all of last season after signing a one-year deal with the Reds.

Madson played catch on Saturday as planned and said he felt OK, according to the Los Angeles Times' Bill Shaikin.

The Angels' bullpen has posted a 4.19 ERA -- 18th in the major leagues -- with Ernesto Frieri filling in as the closer and completing both of his save opportunities.

Madson spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Phillies, posting a 3.59 ERA. He did not become a full-time closer until 2011, when he saved 32 games in 34 opportunities.
