The inevitable move finally happened: the New York Jets have waived quarterback Tim Tebow, who was informed of the decision Monday morning after reporting to workouts.

It has only been 15 months since Tebow led the Denver Broncos to a Wild Card win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. But many have questioned whether Tebow is starting NFL quarterback material, and the Jets hurt his chances by releasing him after free agency and the draft.

The Jets drafted West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith with the eighth pick in the second round of the NFL Draft on Friday and were carrying six QBs on the roster, including Mark Sanchez, former Jaguars quarterback David Garrard and Greg McElroy. Parting ways with Tebow brings the Jets down to five QBs.

Earlier reports suggest the Jets intend on keeping Sanchez at least into the preseason.

After the Broncos traded Tebow last year to the Jets, he put up a poor performance for New York, attempting only eight total passes while averaging 3.2 yards per carry. Rex Ryan gave his rookie QB McElroy chances over Tebow, while using Tebow sparingly out of the wildcat and in punt protection formations.

Ryan had kind words to say about Tebow following the release. Via ProFootballTalk:

“We have a great deal of respect for Tim Tebow,” Jets coach Rex Ryan said in a release.  “Unfortunately, things did not work out the way we all had hoped.  Tim is an extremely hard worker, evident by the shape he came back in this offseason.  We wish him the best moving forward.”
