Report: Atlanta Hawks targeting Stan Van Gundy as next head coach
The Atlanta Hawks are seeking to make Stan Van Gundy their next head coach, Yahoo! expert Adrian Wojnarowski reports. According to the report, Hawks general manager Danny Ferry wants Van Gundy to be the successor to Larry Drew in Atlanta. Drew's contract with the team expires on June 30.
There has reportedly been contact between Ferry and Van Gundy but the two have yet to meet in person about the position.
The Hawks hope that Van Gundy could be used as a lure to bring free-agent Dwight Howard to Atlanta despite the two clashing in Orlando which eventually led to Van Gundy being fired after the 2011-2012 season. Howard was traded to the Lakers in the same offseason.
In eight seasons coaching both the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic, Van Gundy boasts a .641 winning percentage in the regular season with a 371-208 record. Van Gundy took the Orlando Magic to the NBA Finals in 2009 and appeared in the conference finals with the Heat.
