Former Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Jimmy Smith began serving a six-year prison sentence in late March, according to First Coast News in Jacksonville.

According to the Mississippi Department of Corrections, Smith is serving a two-year sentence for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and a four-year sentence for cocaine possession. His tentative release date is Nov. 8, 2018.

Though he entered the Central Mississippi Satellite Facility on March 29, Smith's sentence didn't garner media attention until Monday.

The jail sentence completes a rather stunning fall for Smith, who at one time was one of the NFL's best wide receivers and still stands as perhaps the best player in Jaguars franchise history.

Smith, 44, led the NFL in 1999 with 116 receptions. In 11 seasons with the Jaguars, Smith racked up 862 receptions in 171 career games. He caught 67 career touchdown passes.

Smith hasn't played in the NFL since 2005.
