The Braves announced they designated third baseman/DH Juan Francisco for assignment, reports CBS Sports' Danny Knobler on Twitter. The move was made in order to make room for left-handed pitcher Alex Woods. The team is in need of relievers after season-ending elbow injuries to Jonny Venters and Eric O'Flaherty, and Woods was called up from Double-A Mississippi on Wednesday night.

Woods, 22, was the team's second-round draft pick last year out of the University of Georgia. He was 4-2 with a 1.26 ERA in ten starts for Double-A Mississippi this year. He also allowed only one earned run in seven relief appearances during spring training with the major league club.

Francisco, 25, was hitting .241/.287/.398 in 35 games with the Braves so far this season and had a high strikeout total.
