Randy Spetman is out as Florida State athletics director.

Florida State released a statement saying Spetman -- who became athletics director in 2008 -- will take on a new role with the department as a senior advisor. FSU will begin a search for a new athletics director. Senior associate athletics director Vanessa Fuchs has been named interim AD.

From the school's statement:

Effective today, Florida State University Athletics Director Randy Spetman will take on a new role as senior advisor to the Athletics Department.

During his five-year tenure, Randy established an enviable record for Florida State Athletics and has done so with the highest level of integrity and commitment.

I am pleased, therefore, that through mutual agreement, Randy will continue to advance the Athletics Department's Strategic Plan by working with a full range of stakeholders to gather additional information that will help shape the future of Florida State athletics.

He has agreed to take on this position through the length of his current contract, which ends in February (2014).

Spetman denied a report last week identifying him as a candidate for the athletic director job at Rutgers.

"Contrary to media reports, I am not a candidate for a position at Rutgers," Spetman said in a statement issued by FSU's sports information department. "I was contacted by their representatives some time ago, but let them know at that time that I was happy with my position at Florida State and would not be a candidate."

Whether or not being linked to the Rutgers job was a proactive move on Spetman's part or an issue to his reassignment is already up for speculation.

According to Tallahassee.com, Spetman was scheduled to unveil a three-pronged strategic plan designed to "produce champions, fuel success and inspire collaboration" while also generating more revenue for the athletics program.
