Listen: Ex-Rutgers employee Eric Murdock blasts Mike Rice

Former Rutgers employee Eric Murdock let loose in a 14-minute, profanity-laced tirade in the men's basketball office the day before his contract expired, threatening "to tell the God's honest truth about Mike Rice," and accusing Rice of treating players "like slaves."

USA Today and other outlets obtained the audio, which was posted by The Chronicle of Higher Education, and offers view into what happened between Rice and Murdock, who spent two years as Rutgers director of player development before his contract was not renewed.

Murdock then sent ESPN with a video montage of Rice verbally and physically abusing players during practice. It led to Rice being fired and athletics director Tim Pernetti resigning.

The law firm Connell Foley, which Rutgers contracted to investigate the June 2012 dispute between Rice and Murdock, cited the audio recordings in its report that Rutgers made public shortly after Rice was fired in early April. Though it provided few details on the content of the recording, the Connell Foley report cast it evidence that Murdock was dismissed for insubordination.

The wrongful termination lawsuit Murdock filed against Rutgers claims he was pushed out because of his objections to Rice's treatment of the players. Rutgers' version goes like this: Rice had questions about Murdock's work ethic, and the last straw came when Rice asked him to address a Rutgers summer basketball camp and Murdock instead that day spoke to a camp at Bridgewater-Raritan High School, where his son Eric was camper.

The recording is dated June 29 and contains audio with very strong language:

"For you to put me on notice because I can't come into the office and fake like I'm doing work on the computer, that's my bad," Murdock said in the tirade, during which he was speaking to associate head coach David Cox. "But my title last I heard was director of player development, and I thought I did a pretty good job of that. But now, since I can't call teams to come to your team camp, you put me on notice? Because of a camp, you're going to fire me? Because of a camp?"
