Report: Danny O'Brien, former Maryland and Wisconsin QB, transferring to D-II school
Danny O'Brien, the former Wisconsin and Maryland quarterback, will transfer to a small Division-II school in North Carolina, his high school coach told Fox Sports Wisconsin's Jesse Temple.
O'Brien will attend and play for D-II Catawba College in Salisbury, N.C., said Todd Willert, his high school coach at East Forsyth in North Carolina.
"He just wants to go and have some fun and play some football," Willert told Temple. "I think he's excited to play back in North Carolina so it's not so far away from everything. Family and friends and everybody can go watch him in his last year. I think he's looking forward to that."
O'Brien's once-promising college career has quickly devolved. In early June, he announced his intentions to transfer from Wisconsin — where he had transferred from Maryland one year earlier. As a redshirt freshman in 2010, O'Brien was named the ACC Rookie of the Year with the Terps. But he struggled and fell out of favor in 2011, and after the season he decided to transfer to Wisconsin. With the Badgers, he hoped to cement himself as the team's starter in the post-Russell Wilson era. But he was benched after just three games.
