Diamondbacks deal Ian Kennedy to Padres for Joe Thatcher, Double-A reliever and draft pick

The Arizona Diamondbacks have dealt pitcher Ian Kennedy to the San Diego Padres for reliever Joe Thatcher, Class AA reliever Matt Stites and a compensatory-round draft pick, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. The trade came with less than hour before MLB's 4 p.m non-waiver trade deadline.
The 28-year-old Kennedy, who was traded to Arizona in December 2009, won a National League-best 21 games for the Diamondbacks in 2011. Despite winning 15 games last season, his ERA rose from 2.88 to 4.02. He is currently 3-8 with a 5.23 ERA in 2013. In June, Kennedy received a 10-game suspension for his involvement in a brawl between the Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers after he hit rookie Yasiel Puig in the head and later struck pitcher Zack Greinke.
Kennedy made his major league debut in September 2007 as a member of the New York Yankees when he replaced Mike Mussina. He went on to win a World Series with the Yankees in 2009.
He is making $4.27 million this season and won't become a free agent until 2015.
