The Los Angeles Angels have released reliever Ryan Madson, who signed a one-year deal with the team this offseason.

Madson is most notable for his time in Philadelphia, when he flourished as a setup man to closer Brad Lidge and then saved 32 games himself in 2011 while compiling a 2.37 ERA.

The right-hander signed with the Reds after the 2011 season but tore a ligament in his throwing elbow during Spring Training and underwent Tommy John Surgery. The Angels took a $3.5 million chance on him this offseason, starting the 30-year-old on the 15-day disabled list before transferring Madson to the 60-day disabled list.

Madson pitched only one inning this season, and it was in the Minor Leagues. While with the Inland Empire 66ers in a May outing, the Angels' Class-A Advanced affiliate, Madson struck out one of the three batters he faced.
