The New York Yankees hand-delivered a letter written by general manager Brian Cashman to Alex Rodriguez before his first game back in New York on Friday, and plan to fine him more than $150,000, ESPN New York's Wallace Matthews is reporting.

The letter "reprimanded Rodriguez for his recent actions surrounding his rehab assignment," which included seeking a second medical opinion without giving the team prior notice and failing to show up to a July 12 game after meeting with MLB officials regarding the Biogenesis investigation, according to the report.

From ESPN New York:

Two sources who have seen the letter, said part of it reads: "the club contemplates discipline for your most recent violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement." Although no specific punishment is mentioned; the $153,846 is equivalent to one day's pay under Rodriguez's contract, which calls for him to earn $28 million for 2013.

The Yankees delivered the letter to seven recipients, though Rodriguez denied receiving it. He can appeal the fine through the CBA's grievance procedure.

Asked about the receipt of the letter before Friday's game,  Rodriguez at first said, "It has not happened."

Then, he acknowledged "maybe they sent it to my lawyers. But I'm not really going to talk about that."

But a source with knowledge of the letter's contents said Rodriguez was among seven recipients of it, including A-Rod's attorney, David Cornwell, MLBPA executive director Michael Weiner, MLB executive Rob Manfred and Yankees team president Randy Levine.

The club has already fined backup catcher Francisco Cervelli, who accepted a 50-game suspension for his involvement with Biogenesis, the equivalent of one day's pay for failing to show up for medical treatment on July 28.
