New York Jets rookie quarterback Geno Smith will reportedly start on Saturday against the Giants, according to tweets Tuesday from Manish Mehta, Jets beat reporter for the New York Daily News.

Smith sat out the team's second preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars over the weekend to give more time for his ankle injury to heal. The former West Virginia standout injured himself in his NFL debut earlier this month in a game against the Detroit Lions in which he completed six of seven passes for 47 yards. Mark Sanchez, meanwhile, completed 10 of 13 passes in the game against the Lions, going for 125 yards and a touchdown but also threw a costly interception that resulted in a TD for the Lions, who won the game 26-17. Sanchez said he expects Smith to play on Saturday but had previously made comments that he would no doubt win the starting job for the regular season.

As Dan Hanzus of NFL.com reported earlier in August, the Jets quarterback to start on Aug. 24 will "likely"  be the QB to open the regular season next month.

The Jets kick off their season Sept. 8 with a game at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
