Los Angeles Clippers guard Chris Paul has been elected president of the National Basketball Players Association, the NBPA announced Wednesday.

Paul takes over for veteran Derek Fisher, after Miami Heat forward and league MVP LeBron James declined to run for the position.  Fisher's term as president ended in controversy and resulted in the firing of Billy Hunter, the union's executive director during the All-Star Game.

Vice president New Orleans Pelicans guard Roger Mason was also considered to be a strong candidate for the position.

Paul, a six-time All-Star who was named first-team All-NBA in 2012-13, gives the NBPA its first big-name president since Patrick Ewing's term expired in 2001.
