New York Giants starting safety Stevie Brown tore his ACL during Saturday's preseason game against the Jets, ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting.

Brown, a 26-year-old entering his fourth NFL season, had to be helped off the field during the first quarter on Saturday night after suffering the injury on a Geno Smith interception.

BURKE: What does this mean for Giants' secondary?

After being released by both the Raiders and Colts, Brown broke out with the Giants last season, finishing second in the NFL with eight interceptions. He was expected to start alongside strong safety Antrel Rolle.

Fifth-year pro Ryan Mundy and Tyler Sash, a sixth-round pick in 2011, are listed as the backup safeties on the team's depth chart.

No. 3 cornerback Jayron Hosley was also injured during Saturday's game, suffering a sprained ankle.
