Report: USC assistant Ed Orgeron quits after not getting head coaching job

USC assistant Ed Orgeron resigned Monday, reportedly "outraged" that he did not receive the head coaching job, according to ESPN.com's Brett McMurphy.

According to the report, offensive coordinator Clay Helton is expected to coach the bowl game.

Orgeron quit despite athletic director Pat Haden offering to make Orgeron an assistant head coach and one of the nation's highest paid assistants.

USC hired Washington head coach Steve Sarkisian after he spent five seasons in Seattle.

Orgeron was given the interim tag after Lane Kiffin was fired in September. He led the team to a 6-2 record and said we wanted a chance to coach the team on a full-time basis, even getting support from Kiffin.

“I want to be the head coach at USC,” Orgeron said two weeks ago. “I love being a head coach. I think that it’s something I’m able to do, and do well. And I want to be the head coach at USC when I get the chance. I think I can perform on a very high basis to do what the Trojan family wants me to do.”

USC finished with a 9-4 record this season, and Haden said last month that USC fans expressed support for Orgeron to become the new head coach.
