Report: Bowling Green hires Dino Babers as head coach

Bowling Green has hired Dino Babers of Eastern Illinois as head football coach, according to Joe Schad of ESPN.

Babers, 52, replaces Dave Clawson, who was named head coach at Wake Forest last week. He is the first black coach in Bowling Green football history.

Babers was 19-7 in two seasons at Eastern Illinois, including 12-2 in 2013. The Panthers were ranked No. 2 in the final regular-season FCS poll, before losing to Towson last week in the FCS quarterfinals.

Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo won the Walter Payton Award as the FCS's top player after passing for 5,050 yards and 53 touchdowns. Babers also coached Robert Griffin III as a Baylor assistant under Art Briles, and has been an assistant at UCLA, Pittsburgh, Texas A&M, Arizona, San Diego State and Purdue.
