The Miami Dolphins' first move following a disappointing 8-8 season is firing offensive coordinator Mike Sherman, the team announced Monday.

Sherman's ouster is not unexpected. Reports had owner Stephen Ross possibly clearing house in Miami's front office following the Dolphins' ugly season-ending loss to the Jets and another missed postseason.

Ross could next determine the fates of head coach Joe Philbin and general manager Jeff Ireland.

From NFL.com:

"I believe some change is coming -- could be a total house cleaning or just a change within coaching assistants," one source said. "Nobody knows for sure."

Philbin thanked Sherman for this two seasons with the Dolphins.

“I would like to thank Mike for his contributions to the Miami Dolphins,” Philbin said. “Mike has been a mentor to me throughout my coaching career, dating back to 1979. He is a man of great integrity, dedicated to his family, his team, his players and his profession. On behalf of the entire Miami Dolphins organization I want to wish Mike and his family the very best in the future.”
Recently fired Browns head coach Rob Chudzinski has been linked as a possible candidate to replace Sherman. Chudzinski was a coach and coordinator at the University of Miami from 1994-2003 and ran the Hurricanes' offense that won the 2001 national championship.
