The University of Houston has hired Rockets assistant coach Kelvin Sampson to a five-year contract, according to Jeff Goodman of ESPN.com. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports earlier reported the school and Sampson were close to a deal.

Sampson, 58, replaces James Dickey, who resigned for personal reasons last week.

Sampson coached Oklahoma to the 2002 Final Four and has reached the NCAA tournament 13 times. He produced 18 consecutive winning seasons at Washington State, Oklahoma and Indiana.

Sampson has worked as an NBA assistant since receiving an NCAA-imposed five-year show-cause order tied to violations for impermissible calls to recruits that landed Oklahoma and Indiana on probation. Sampson's NCAA penalty expired last year.
