Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Maicer Izturis will need surgery after an MRI revealed a complete tear of the lateral collateral ligament in his left knee, the team announced Monday.

Izturis most likely will need about four to six months of rehabilitation. The team says he will also seek a second opinion on the injury.

The Jays had previously placed Izturis on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained left knee after he tripped on a stair in the dugout heading to the bat rack before Sunday's 11-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles.

The Blue Jays are already down an infielder, as they wait for Jose Reyes to come back from his stint on the disabled list.

Izturis is hitting .286 with no home runs and one RBI in 11 games this season.
