The documentary series following Michael Sam's quest to become the first openly gay player to make an NFL roster has been placed on hold, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN.

The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) announced the series shortly after Sam made history by being drafted in the seventh round by the St.Louis Rams, but some criticized the move, saying it made it seem as though Sam was more interested in the spotlight than in focusing on football.

OWN president Erik Logan said the network decided to postpone the series after speaking with the Rams, reports ESPN's Darren Rovell.

"After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, 'The Untitled Michael Sam Project' has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dreams of making the team,"

On Thursday, reports surfaced that Sam had concealed the television series during the pre-draft process, for fear that it would scare away prospective teams.
