Report: Giants pitcher Matt Cain returns to DL, could return June 6 vs. Mets

Giants pitcher Matt Cain will head back to the disabled list and thus will not be on the mound Saturday when San Francisco plays the Cardinals on the road in St. Louis, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle's Henry Schulman.

The news comes just two days after Cain was reportedly set to make his return after sitting out for 10 days on the DL with a strained right hamstring. He suffered the injury in a win in Colorado after he caught Charlie Blackmon looking to end the third inning.

In Cain's place on Saturday, Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Yusmeiro Petit will face Michael Wacha. Assuming all goes well with Cain's continued rehab, he will return on June 6 at home in a series opener against the New York Mets. He said on Friday that he's still feeling discomfort, despite throwing a full pen, giving a thumbs up and saying he felt good on Wednesday.

Bochy indicated on Friday the pain Cain is experiencing is not all that bad:

"If this were September, he probably would start. It’s not like he’s feeling any pain in there. He’s running fine. It’s a little something he’s feeling. We don’t want to put him at risk where he could reinjure it...He wants to pitch. He feels he can pitch. But at the same time he admitted he’s feeling a little something in there, to make us go this route.”

At 35-19, the Giants are currently first in the National League West with the best record in baseball. San Francisco wraps up its series against St. Louis on Sunday.
