The Chicago White Sox have signed Eddy Alvarez, who won a silver medal at the Sochi Olympics as part of the United States 5000-meter relay team, to a minor league contract, according to The Associated Press.

Alvarez was a top prospect at shortstop in high school, and also played one season of college baseball at Salt Lake Community College where he batted for a .303 average, and was named to the All-Conference team despite focusing on training for the 2010 Olympics for the previous three years.
