Freddy Adu has returned to Benfica after spending one season on loan at Monaco, where he was given just a peripheral role at the French outfit.

The U.S. international, who had his first training session of the preseason with Benfica on Thursday, does not know yet whether he will be part of the plans of coach Jorge Jesus, but he is hoping to impress his new boss.

"I will be training with Benfica [today]," he said on his Twitter account. "I am excited and cannot wait to start training. I am not 100 percent sure if I am staying or not, I want to but you never know."

Adu, 20, signed for Benfica from Real Salt Lake in the summer of 2007 for a fee in the region of $2 million.
