Landon Donovan not part of U.S. roster for upcoming qualifiers

Landon Donovan has not played for the U.S. since a 1-0 friendly victory against Mexico in August.

Landon Donovan is set to be omitted from Jurgen Klinsmann's U.S. national team squad for the team's June World Cup qualifiers, SI.com has learned.

Donovan, 31, the U.S.'s all-time leading goal-scorer, took a self-imposed soccer sabbatical from January to late March, getting away from the game and making a 10-day visit to Cambodia. But he started playing again for Los Angeles on March 30 and said he wanted to earn back his place on the national team.

Donovan has one goal and one assist in five MLS league games, but that has not been enough to convince Klinsmann to bring him back to the national team yet. The only way Donovan might be called into the upcoming camp would be if there is a rash of injuries to U.S. players who are set to be called in ahead of him. The camp starts in California on May 21.

Donovan last played for the U.S. in a 1-0 friendly win at Mexico last August. The three-time World Cup star has 49 goals in 144 international appearances.

The U.S. will have friendlies against Belgium in Cleveland on May 29 and Germany in Washington D.C. on June 2 before World Cup qualifiers at Jamaica on June 7, vs. Panama on June 11 (in Seattle) and vs. Honduras on June 18 (near Salt Lake City).

Donovan may still be called up for the CONCACAF Gold Cup in July.
