Spain manager Del Bosque mulling lineup changes for Chile match

Defending World Cup champion Spain stumbled in its 2014 World Cup opener last week against the Netherlands, as they watched the Dutch run away with a 5-1 lead. Now, facing a big deficit in goal differential and a critical showdown with Chile on Wednesday, La Furia Roja are set to rock the boat.

In an effort to shake things up and breathe some life into the Spanish side, manager Vincente Del Bosque plans on making some changes to the team's lineup and approach.

“We will keep some things the same, but we will change others,” Del Bosque said, via The Guardian. “We are flexible in some aspects of the game but stubborn in others. Nobody should be alarmed by the changes that are made. We will not be singling out anybody. All of the players have our affection and appreciation. We were the ones that brought them here. But above any personal considerations, we have to find solutions for the team.”

The reported potential changes could include moving Pedro, JaviMartínez and CescFábregas into the starting XI. Goalkeeper Iker Casillas struggled badly in the opening game, but David de Gea's injury could keep him in the starting XI.

Pedro would move ahead of David Silva in the lineup, while Gerard Piqué and Brazilian born Diego Costa, who has received plenty of heat from the crowd in Brazil, could give their spots up to Martinez and Fábregas.

Spain is in an early hole after the disappointing start, but it is not unfamiliar territory. In 2010, Spain lost its opener to Switzerland before going on to defeat Chile and the rest of its opponents on the way to a world title. The Spaniards will be looking for a similar story line in 2014. First kick for Spain vs. Chile is set for 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday at EstádioMaracanã in Rio de Janeiro.
