USA winger Joe Gyau signs with Bundesliga power Borussia Dortmund

As the U.S. men's national team aims to reach the World Cup quarterfinals, the next generation of potential World Cup talent is positioning itself for the 2018 cycle. The latest example of that is 21-year-old winger prospect Joe Gyau. 

Bundesliga giant Borussia Dortmund announced on Monday morning that the club has signed Gyau from Hoffenheim. Gyau will be starting his career with Dortmund on the U-23 squad. Gyau joins U.S. youth prospect Junior Flores as Americans in the Dortmund set-up, one which also helped produce U.S. striker Terrence Boyd. 

Last season, Gyau made his Bundesliga debut with Hoffenheim, but only recorded two club appearances, spending most of his time with the reserve team. The previous season, he earned playing time in the 2. Bundesliga on loan at St. Pauli. 

Gyau has previously represented the United States at the U-15, U-17, U-20 and U-23 levels, but now he will have the opportunity to take the next step in his club career. He earned a call-up to U.S. senior camp ahead of a November 2012 friendly against Russia, but he didn't participate in the match.

Gyau's father, Philip, played for the USA six times between 1989 and 1991.
