Each week, Campus Union will delve into the fun, the weird and the wacky of college football with a series called Between The Hashes. It’s a way to decompress from the madness of the week, and to find a few things that you might have missed.

College football rewarded patient fans for dealing with a relatively dull Week 4 slate by giving them everything they could have wanted and more in Week 5. Ranked teams fell, other ranked teams made statements and the first coach was fired in USC's Lane Kiffin. With every great week of games, there are just as many plays, pictures and quotes in toe. So rather than drone on, let's get right to them.

This week in uniforms

It's impossible to talk about this week's haberdashery without mentioning the Virginia Tech helmets that made their way into Thursday night's win against Georgia Tech. There were plenty of reactions (mostly negative), but the Hokies got a win, so fans will be seeing the lids again soon.

The Yellow Jackets had their own style in the game, going for the throwback unis and a blinding amount of white.

Miami (Ohio) games are pretty ugly, so these helmets are perfectly fitting. We already broke down the RedHawks' uniforms at length, so an action pic only makes sense.

And maybe Alabama isn't going to wear this getup any time soon, but the Star Wars crossover potential would be huge:

Football in motion

The rise of animated GIFs and Vines gives fans the chance to see highlights out of context. Sure, the format has limitations, but there are idiosyncrasies to each that make them almost like modern-day trading cards. Here are a few of the best examples from Week 5.

West Virginia got its best win of the year (and a much-needed one at that) against Oklahoma State, and coach Dana Holgorsen was in rare form.

Quote of the week

At first, with everything the LSU-Georgia game offered, I thought the quote had to come from someone who participated. And there was a really great quote that summed up the classic, from Georgia offensive coordinator Mike Bobo.

But then something much better came up.

This is the greatest question ever asked by a media member. It's complex, it's open to interpretation, you can pick a different favorite part every time you read it and it's basically the print equivalent of a Kyle video.

While it's no Tom Izzo addressing the student section at Michigan State, gotta give credit to Georgia basketball coach Mark Fox for stepping up in a big way.

The struggle is real

At some programs, it wasn't all dancing and dress-up. UCF gave it a good run against South Carolina, but it couldn't quite get there.

Arkansas coach Bret Bielema had a little trouble with the Hog Walk.

The Ricky Dobbs All-Stars

We don't pay enough attention to defensive players and return specialists in our roundup of deserving Ricky Dobbs All-Stars, but this week we made an attempt to give some love to guys without traditional eye-popping offensive statistics. Of course, that doesn't negate those gaudy numbers, as those are what the RDAS are founded on.
