Between the Hashes Week 13: Sad pandas and The Weather Channel win the day

Each week, Campus Union will delve into the fun, the weird and the wacky of college football with a series called Between The Hashes. It’s a way to decompress from the madness of the week, and to find a few things that you might have missed.

Is everyone staying warm? We're entering the deep freeze portion of the schedule, in which former players turned analysts talk about putting hand warmers everywhere, coaches wear funny-looking hats and athletes act like they've never seen snow in their entire lives. Meanwhile, students will decide to to paint themselves and attend games shirtless, because college. We have the luxury of Slankets and Snuggies (your choice), warm beverages and space heaters, and that's all right by me.

So save your energy, you'll need it for the long winter. We'll try to keep this short and sweet so you can get on with your sweater-buying and acquisition of potent potables.

Why are there so many songs about rainbows?

Speaking of weather, this was the week of The Weather Channel. When asked about AJ McCarron's Sports Illustrated cover, Nick Saban said "I haven't seen a newspaper today. I don't know what's happening in the world. I watch The Weather Channel for 10 minutes in the morning."

With The Weather Channel in his back pocket, Saban is one step closer to world domination. When he takes control of the stock market we'll know it's truly over.

The face of suffering

There are many fan bases enduring a tough time right now. Like that of Northwestern, which has dropped seven straight. Or that of Arkansas, the owner of an eight-game losing streak. Or that of Purdue, which is, well, Purdue.

But the perfect picture to capture a reeling fan of a struggling team comes from Corvallis. Oregon State won six in a row earlier this season after losing its opener to FCS Eastern Washington, but the Beavers are in a tailspin, dropping four straight after Saturday's blowout 69-27 loss to Washington.

That poor panda. Somebody get him/her/it some In-N-Out.

No cheering in the press box

It happens, and it's usually not a huge deal when it does. But typically, people who cheer in the press box try to keep a low profile. There's something almost refreshing about this gentleman's lack of decorum, and I, for one, applaud him for being unafraid to let his flag fly.

Mississippi State is no stranger to team-building. The Bulldogs went bowling and milked cows earlier this year. This week, they held a wing-eating contest. Coach Dan Mullen knows his way around a chicken wing.

Plays of the Week

If last week was the week of the crazy catch, this week belonged to wild interceptions.

Northern Illinois safety Jimmie Ward collected his 10th career pick on this snag at Toledo.

Oregon quarterback Marcus Mariota entered Saturday's game at Arizona with no interceptions on the season, so it was only fitting that his first came courtesy of an incredibly acrobatic play.

It wasn't all defensive highlights, though. This jump and run by Kent State's Nate Terhune on a fake punt was pretty good.

Michigan State got a crazy completion from wide receiver Bennie Fowler.

And this catch by Oregon's De'Anthony Thomas was worthy of recognition, despite the Ducks' 42-16 loss.

But the best play of this week came on a fake jump pass by Vanderbilt quarterback Patton Robinette, which proved to be the game-winning touchdown in the 'Dores' 14-10 victory over Tennessee.

Mark Dantonio was a little bit salty during his halftime interview, but he's likely in a better mood following the Spartans' win 30-6 over Northwestern to clinch a berth in the Big Ten title game.

The Ricky Dobbs All-Stars

Before we get into some of the best stat lines of the week, we’d be remiss not to discuss a category named after former Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs without a quick word on the Midshipmen’s current signal-caller. Keenan Reynolds accounted for a team-record eight total touchdowns (including seven on the ground to go with 240 rushing yards) as Navy beat San Jose State 58-52 in triple overtime on Friday night. I’m sure he made Mr. Dobbs proud.
