Texas is reportedly “backing away” from offering a scholarship to former USC quarterback Max Wittek for undisclosed reasons, according to the Austin American-Statesman.

In January, Wittek announced that he would transfer from USC and play out his two remaining years of eligibility at another program. But an off-field circumstance could delay Wittek's graduation and immediate eligibility, per a report from ESPN on Wednesday.

Wittek told Fox Sports' Bruce Feldman he was unaware of any change in his situation and plans to make his decision later this month.

Wittek, who was long believed to be leaning toward joining Texas, has taken multiple visits to Austin. The junior was “thought to be practically signed, sealed and delivered,” according to the Statesman. Wittek went 14-of-26 for 212 yards with one interception in five games at USC in 2013. He has reportedly also expressed interest in Louisville, Pittsburgh and Hawaii.
