Jake Heaps held out of Miami scrimmage to 'rest his arm'
Miami Hurricanes quarterback Jake Heaps was held out of Monday's team scrimmage in order to 'rest his arm,' according to the Miami Herald. Heaps had been expected to play.
Heaps was listed in a recent Hurricanes depth chart as a co-starter along with true freshman Brian Kaaya. But during Monday's scrimmage, which was closed to fans and media, Heaps did not compete snap for snap with Kaaya for the starting job. The school noted in its scrimmage report, “senior quarterback Jake Heaps was held out of Monday’s scrimmage to rest his arm." The school did not address why Heaps needed the rest or if he was injured, according to the Herald's Susan Miller Degnan.
Quarterback Ryan Williams was the team's presumptive starter earlier this year before tearing his ACL in a spring scrimmage similar to Monday's and is out indefinitely.
Heaps is a fifth-year graduate student who transferred from the University of Kansas to Miami just two months ago. At Kansas last season Heaps completed 128 of 261 attempts for 1,414 yards and eight touchdowns, leading Kansas to wins over Louisiana Tech (that snapped the team's 22-game losing streak to FBS opponents) and over West Virginia (that snapped the team's 27-game Big 12 losing streak).
