Between The Hashes Week 13: Flying headsets, Goldy shines again
Each week, the college football team here at SI will delve into the fun, the weird and the wacky of college football with a series called Between The Hashes. It’s a way to decompress from the madness of the week, and to find a few things that you might have missed.
With Thanksgiving upon us, it's time to reflect on everything we love about college football. We discuss the plays, the players, the coaches, the tailgates, the games themselves and everything in between. The sport has its problems and there is a lot left to fix, but many great memories have been made watching and talking about it. This year has been no different.
We're making history in the College Football Playoff era, and the arguments of who is going to get in take us away from the fact that there actually will be four teams playing for the title. Sure, a deserving team might get left out. But we'll have a champion that has to win two games to earn it. That means something, right?
Here are some of the better, more off-beat moments from Week 13.
Go easy on the headset
Maryland came back to win, 23-16, at Michigan on Saturday, and Terrapins coach Randy Edsall was excited. Like, really excited. So much so he hurled his headset into the air. Those poor headsets are always getting tossed and thrown and treated unfairly. This aggression will not stand, man.

A true team player
Special honors go to Illinois wide receiver Mike Dudek this week. The freshman receiver led the Illini with 11 catches for 115 yards in their win over Penn State, and after the game he lent a helping hand as well. Way to go, pal.
Streetlights, Fake Swans
College kids are weird. This is not news. But we still need to highlight those singular moments that show just how weird they really are. Like when a Virginia student sings into a fake goose he brought to a game. That's one of those times.
This Week in Trophies
First, some context: Everyone's favorite fake coach Twitter account, FauxPelini, started talking to Minnesota's mascot, Goldy, on social media. It turned into a conversation about how Nebraska and Minnesota needed a trophy, so they came up with some ideas. And then someone made a 3D model. And then Minnesota actually made the trophy. So naturally, Goldy had it on the sideline. We've heralded Goldy in Hashes before, but he's the front runner for Best Mascot this season, and he's pretty much running away from the competition at this point.
Choose Wisely
It was a little chilly in Utah, so much so that the team had its choice of broth or hot chocolate. As I'm always a worst-case scenario kind of guy, I can only imagine what had happened if you were in the heat of the game, filling up a water bottle out of that giant Powerade container, thinking it's actually Powerade, then taking a big ol' gulp to find it's broth.

A heck of a haircut
It takes commitment to buy a jersey, or set up a tailgate, or buy season tickets. That makes you a solid fan from the get-go. Some people like to go a bit further, and it's important we celebrate their efforts as well. Like for instance, this Nebraska fan, who went the extra mile with his haircut. Now I'm just wondering if he'll keep that and wear it to work after his team lost to Minnesota, or if he's going to have to shave it all off and wait for it to grow during the cold winter months.
The UGA I – UGA VIII Memorial Mascot of the Week
This week's award goes to Burt Reynolds, for planting the spear at Florida State's game against Boston College on Saturday.
