Auburn DE Elijah Daniel arrested on burglary, theft charges

AUBURN, Ala. (AP) Auburn defensive end Elijah Daniel has been suspended from the football team following his arrest with two other athletes on theft and burglary charges that police said Thursday resulted from an investigation into items missing from dormitory rooms after spring break.

Coach Gus Malzahn issued a statement saying the 6-foot-2, 282-pound junior from Indianapolis, Indiana, is suspended indefinitely.

Lee County jail records show Daniel was charged Wednesday with four counts of theft and four more counts of burglary. His bond is set at $24,000.

Six of the charges are felonies. The most serious case against Daniel is first-degree theft, which involves property worth at least $2,500 or anything taken from another person.

Auburn police said Daniel, 21, and two other men who lived in Donahue Residence Hall became suspects after students returning from spring break reported that several dorm rooms had been broken into. Jewelry, electronic devices and video games consoles were missing.

Investigators later searched several residences and recovered items that had been stolen.

DeNorris James, 23, of Smiths Station and Khalil Sellers, 21, of Aurora, Colorado, also were charged with burglary and theft. Police said additional charges were possible, but no one else is suspected in the case.

James, a linebacker, was listed on Auburn's spring football roster. Sellers is identified as a sprinter on Auburn's track website but is not included on the current roster.

Court records were not immediately available to show whether Daniel or the other men have lawyers.

Daniel played in 13 games last season and started in two.
