NCAA president Mark Emmert owes $49,000 to the University of Washington, reportsUSA TODAY’s Brent Schrotenboer.
While serving as Washington’s president from 2004–2010, Emmert signed a pledge to grant $100,000 of his earnings to a scholarship fund at the university. According to Schrotenboer’s report, Emmert paid $51,000 to the university by January 2010, but did not pay any additional money once he became the NCAA’s president in April 2010.
As a result, the university endowed the scholarship at half its intended amount.

“Personal philanthropy is a private matter for individuals and their families,” said Emmert in response to reports regarding his failed payment. “My family and I care greatly for the University of Washington and will continue to support it throughout our lives.”
In February, the NCAA Board of Governors unanimously voted to extend Emmert’s contract by three years. He will remain president through October 2020, and has an option to extend his tenure into 2021.
