Iowa State Football Player Accused of Betting Against His Own Team, per Report

Four Iowa State football players were charged with tampering of records in connection to the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation’s gambling probe, the Des Moines Register reported Thursday.

One of the players is defensive tackle Isaiah Lee, who is accused of placing 26 different wagers on 12 separate Cyclones football games. One of the games he allegedly bet on was the 2021 matchup between Iowa State and Texas that he played in, but Lee bet on the Longhorns to win. He finished the game with just one tackle, and the Cyclones won, 30–7. 

In total, Lee is accused of placing 115 bets for over $885, according to court records.

The other three players charged Thursday were running back Jirehl Brock, tight end DeShawn Hanika and offensive lineman Jacob Remsburg.

Brock—the team’s leading rusher last season—also is alleged to have placed bets on two games he played in during the 2022 season, against Iowa and Kansas State. Overall, he was found to have placed 1,327 wagers for over $12,050, according to court records.

Hanika was only discovered to have placed bets on Iowa State basketball, not football. Still, his 70 bets on his own school’s basketball teams are against NCAA rules.

Lee, Brock and Hanika could be permanently banned from the NCAA because they were all found to bet on their own games or games at their own school. Remsburg, on the other hand, did not place any bets on Iowa State sports, but he did wager on other NCAA events and could be suspended for up to half the football season.

All four players were starters during the 2022 season.

Seven athletes from Iowa State and Iowa, including Cyclones starting quarterback Hunter Dekkers, were previously charged with tampering with records from gambling last week.
