The Kansas Jayhawks returned to conference play and stayed atop the Big 12 standings with their defensive victory over the Iowa State Cyclones. But the Jayhawks weren't the only team in conference play, as big matchups happened across the day.
We'll have more coverage of yesterday's victory for Kansas. But before we update last week's Power Rankings, let's take a quick look around the rest of the play from the Big 12 in Week 5 of the season.
#25 Kansas State 37 - Texas Tech 28
Kansas State got off to a quick start, with quarterback Adrian Martinez taking off for a 57-yard run on the first play of the game. Texas Tech never fully recovered, falling to the Wildcats to fall to 1-1 in the conference.
Martinez ran for 171 yards and three touchdowns, throwing for another 116 yards and a score. Deuce Vaughn ran for 170 yards. Donovan Smith threw for 359 yards and two touchdowns, but also threw 2 interceptions.
The Wildcats now sit atop the Big 12 Conference standings, tied with the Jayhawks.
TCU 55 - #18 Oklahoma 24
A fumble by Oklahoma Sooners wide receiver Marvin Mims set the tone early in this one, as the TCU Horned Frogs dominated this game from start to finish to remain undefeated on the season.
Dillon Gabriel left the game with a suspected concussion after being hit in the head while sliding during the second quarter. TCU LB Jamoi Hodge was ejected for targeting on the play, and tempers flared for the two teams throughout the rest of the game.
But this was Max Duggan's day, as he threw for 302 yards and 3 touchdowns, running for 116 yards and 2 more scores. In all, the Horned Frogs put up 678 yards on Oklahoma, who now have to answer questions all week about the play of their defense.
The Sooners are off to an 0-2 start in conference play for the second time in three years, and are hoping to see a repeat of the 2020 season. In that year, they lost their first two conference games and then used the Red River Showdown as a springboard to win out the rest of the season.
And TCU is off to Lawrence to decide first place in the conference standings in a game that will be featured on College Gameday.
#9 Oklahoma State 36 - #16 Baylor 25
A low scoring game broke wide open with 39 combined points in the third quarter, and the Oklahoma State Cowboys were able to answer a third quarter rally by the Baylor Bears to open Big 12 play with a victory.
A Jaden Nixon kickoff return touchdown to start the second half pushed the Cowboy lead to 20, but Blake Shapen lead back to back drives to close within 6. And another Cowboy scoring run was answered by a 70 yard touchdown pass and 2-point conversion to bring the margin back to a single score heading into the fourth quarter.
But interceptions on the first two drives of the fourth quarter for Baylor sandwiched a short field goal that pushed the lead to two possessions, and the Bears just didn't have enough.
Texas 38 - West Virginia 20
The Texas Longhorns dominated every aspect of the game against the West Virginia Mountaineers and bounced back in a big way to get back on track in Big 12 play.
Texas quarterback Hudson Card threw for 303 yards and 3 touchdowns, receiver Xavier Worthy caught 2 touchdowns and threw for another, and Bijan Robinson got back to his dominant ways as he ran for 101 yards and a score.
West Virginia didn't turn the ball over, but couldn't really get anything going until late in the game when the result was already decided. And the defense only stopped Texas twice all night. It was an extremely disappointing performance for a coach who is trying to save his job.
