New Seattle DK Metcalf Trade Details Emerge: No. 1 Receiver for Justin Herbert, L.A. Chargers?

The Seattle Seahawks are making some big roster moves as the offseason treads on, something that could potentially have an impact on former Oregon Ducks star and current Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert.

Per reports from FOX NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Chargers could be a team to watch in the sweepstakes for Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf, who requested to be traded Wednesday. The news came the same day that Seattle released longtime veteran receiver Tyler Lockett.

"Sources: DK Metcalf is expected to draw interest from multiple teams, but dating back to last offseason, the Chargers were the one team that quietly but aggressively pursued him in trade talks—only to be rebuffed by Seattle," Schultz tweeted. "The Chargers remain in the receiver market this offseason."

The asking price from the Seahawks is hefty yet multiple teams have already inquired about the trade, according to the Athletic's Dianna Russini: Seattle wants a first and third-round pick for Metcalf, while Metcalf's new contract would be worth around $30 million per year.

Metcalf, 27, came up just short of a third straight 1,000-yard campaign this past season but remains a productive, big-bodied wideout that's a downfield threat on any given play. He finished 2024 with 66 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns.

Metcalf has been a model of consistency, reaching the 900-yard receiving mark during all six of seasons in the NFL.

As for Herbert, he finished the 2024 season 332 of 504 passing for 3,870 yards, 23 touchdowns and just three interceptions while adding 69 rush attempts for 306 yards and two more touchdowns. He topped his regular-season interception in the AFC Wild Card loss to the Houston Texans by throwing four picks.

Despite Herbert's disappointing end to the 2024 season, he remains one of the more talented quarterbacks in the NFL, though he still needs to add more postseason success to his resume.

Just ask Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh what he thinks of Herbert. If Metcalf feels similarly, his ideal trade destination could be L.A. in order to team up with Herbert.

“Enjoy it. He’s not only one of the best in the game currently, he’s one of the best of all-time,” Harbaugh said of Herbert. “I do not feel at all like I’m going out on a limb in saying that. ... Everything you could say good about a quarterback and then some. Talent and effort, and just intangibles that are off the chart. Every measurement you could have for a quarterback, tangible or intangible, he possesses at the highest level. It’s like being around greatness every day.”

Metcalf has had Geno Smith as his quarterback for the past three seasons, a pairing that has seen its highs and lows. Smith has been one of the league's most inspiring comeback stories over the past few years but his age (34) and some inconsistent performances has left Seattle with an unclear future at quarterback.

Herbert could be the fresh start Metcalf needs and would give the Chargers a new No. 1 wide receiver in the process alongside second-year wideout Ladd McConkey.
