Belkin's Hofland wins first stage of Tour of Utah

CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) Moreno Hofland announced his return from a serious injury by using a textbook lead-out from his Belkin teammates to win the opening stage of the Tour of Utah on Monday.

The 22-year-old Dutch sprinter, who fractured ribs and vertebrae in his lower back at the Tour of California earlier, edged out SmartStop's Jure Kocjan and Lampre-Merida's Andrea Palini.

The 113.5-mile stage to open the 10th edition of the Tour of Utah took riders through the Parowan Gap and Cedar Breaks National Monument before returning to Cedar City, where the field bunched on the final circuit through town to set up the sprint finish.

The top overall contenders, including defending champion Tom Danielson and former Grand Tour winners Chris Horner, Ivan Basso and Cadel Evans, finished safely in the peloton.
