Brennauer of Germany wins world time trial

PONFERRADA, Spain (AP) Lisa Brennauer of Germany claimed her second gold medal in three days at the road cycling world championships after winning the individual time trial on Tuesday.

Brennauer finished the 29.5-kilometer (18.3-mile) route to and from Ponferrada in 38 minutes, 48 seconds.

Ukraine's Anna Solovey took silver at 18 seconds behind, while Evelyn Stevens of the United States completed the podium with her second medal of these worlds after coming across 21 slower.

On Sunday, Brennauer and Stevens helped Specialized-Lululemon win the women's team time trial gold for a third consecutive year.

Brennauer said the course design, which featured one climb near the finish, was perfectly suited for her riding style.

''I knew that it was so good for me, that it was so long,'' she said. ''I just gave it all on the climb and took no risks on the downhill.

''It's overwhelming. I need time to know that it is reality.''

Defending champion Ellen Van Dijk, who started last, was already off Brennauer's pace when a sudden rain shower slowed her down even further. She ended up in seventh place at more than 1 minute, 11 seconds back.

The men's time trial will be on Wednesday, when Germany's Tony Martin will aim for a fourth straight world title.

The women's road race will be on Saturday, followed by the men's road race on Sunday to close the weeklong competition.
