Marlins plan season-long 'Back to the Future' promotion

In honor of the "prediction" made by Back to the Future II, the Miami Marlins are planning a season-long "Rewrite The Future" promotion.

The Miami Marlins are the latest baseball team to capitalize on Back to the Future film "predictions," announcing plans on Tuesday for a season-long "Rewrite The Future" promotion.

The context: the 1989 classic Back to the Future II depicted the Chicago Cubs ending their World Series drought in 2015 with a win over an unnamed Miami baseball team. That last part was particularly shocking to Marty McFly, who had traveled into the future to 2015 not expecting to discover a baseball team had set up shop in Florida.

In an effort to rewrite the film's prediction, the Marlins have planned a three-part initiative for home games at Marlins Park this season.

On Sunday, the Marlins will celebrate the beginning of the season with "Back to Opening Day!" The club's social media team will recount, minute by minute, the Marlins' first-ever game back on April 5, 1993, a 6-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Over the first three days of June, the second part of the promotion will dub the homestand vs. the Cubs the "#RewriteTheFuture" series. June 2 will be Social Media Night, and fans who purchase special-event ticket packages will get a free t-shirt.

Finally, the Sept. 25 game against the Atlanta Braves will be "Back to the Future Night." Fans will be encouraged to wear futuristic costumes, and special-event ticket holders will receive a "Billy McFly" bobblehead doll named after the club's mascot, Billy the Marlin.

Proceeds from both special-event ticket packages will also benefit the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research.
