Arizona Diamondbacks Rookie Sensation Corbin Carroll Hit By Pitch, Leaves Game

In this story:
Arizona Diamondbacks rookie outfielder Corbin Carroll left Wednesday's game against the Colorado Rockies with a right wrist contusion, the team officially announced.
Carroll got hit by a pitch on a check swing in the fourth inning, but he initially remained in the game following the injury delay. The NL Rookie of the Year favorite advanced on two walks before scoring on a two-RBI single by center fielder Alek Thomas that put Arizona up 9-5.
When the Diamondbacks went back into the field, Carroll did not rejoin his teammates. Tommy Pham moved from left field to right field, while designated hitter Lourdes Gurriel Jr. came in to play left. Emmanuel Rivera eventually joined the lineup as a pinch hitter in Carroll's place.
Carroll was 0-for-1 with a strikeout and two runs when he exited Wednesday afternoon's contest. He also got plunked in the third inning.

Carroll has been hit by 12 pitches this year, but he has still managed to suit up for 135 of the Diamondbacks' 140 games thus far.
The former first round pick is batting .280 with 24 home runs, 68 RBI, 41 stolen bases and an .884 OPS on the season, putting him in prime position to win NL Rookie of the Year even if he does miss some time. His biggest competitor, Cincinnati Reds infielder Matt McLain, went on the injured list himself back on Aug. 28.
The Diamondbacks are set to open a four-game road series with the Chicago Cubs on Thursday. The first game is scheduled to get underway at 7:40 p.m. ET.
Both clubs are right in the thick of the NL Wild Card race, making Carroll's status an even more important storyline to keep an eye on.
Entering Wednesday, Arizona had lost six of its last eight contests to fall to 71-68. The Diamondbacks now sit 0.5 games out of the third and final NL Wild Card spot after holding on to beat the Rockies 12-5 on Wednesday.
