In the current climate of professional rodeo, where limited-entry rodeos are so prevalent, events like the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo offer a unique opportunity for barrel racers. Open to all cards and permits, the rodeo began with a barrel racing long round held at the 1st Community Credit Union Spur Arena on Sunday, March 29.

From the initial 230 entries, the top 120 times qualified back to one of the ten performances held inside Foster Communications Coliseum. Throughout those performances, the field will be narrowed to 12 barrel racers, who will qualify for the Finals on April 17.

The lucrative building rodeos in Texas, known as the Texas Swing, are wrapping up, and San Angelo will close out the winter run. Rodeo athletes will soon begin traveling north and west to the spring runs of rodeos.

Unsurprisingly, Latricia Duke and DM He Will Run Em ("Carlos") topped the stacked field with another flawless run. The duo took on the winter buildings in impressive fashion, starting strong at the National Western Stock Show and Rodeo in Denver, Colo., and recently topping the leaderboard in rounds of RODEOHOUSTON and Rodeo Austin.

Currently ranked No. 2 in the World, Duke has quickly amassed $67,416 in season earnings. She and Carlos earned another huge paycheck for their win in San Angelo, and they are set to run again on April 16. In Carlos' first year of professional rodeo, he continues to rise to the occasion in a variety of setups.

Stay tuned to Rodeo On SI for a special feature with Duke, coming later this week.

Another speedy duo, Michelle Alley and Lipstick N Stilletos, finished second, by just two-hundredths of a second. The pair has struggled with downed barrels at some of the building rodeos, but when they put together a clean run, they are tough to beat. They recently swept their Super Series at RODEOHOUSTON, a historic feat that few have accomplished.

Finishing third, World Standings leader Kassie Mowry clocked in at 15.76. Mowry is hot off wins at the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo, RODEHOUSTON, and Rodeo Austin. A three-time victor in San Angelo, Mowry has earned titles in 2017, 2023, and 2025.
