Runner-Up to Steph Curry in Celebrity Golf Event Details Run-In With Harsh Heckler

At the American Century Classic over the weekend, former tennis star Mardy Fish dealt with a heckler who yelled at him twice on the 18th hole.

A video of Fish hitting his tee shot on the final hole of the third round at the celebrity golf tournament on Sunday went viral after a fan in the crowd can be heard mimicking a bird sound to throw the former tennis player off.

Fish, who was competing for a chance to win the tournament against Warriors star Stephen Curry at the time, broke down exactly what happened, explaining that the heckler shouted exactly at the wrong time.

“So, I take the club back and right at the top of my backswing, it wasn’t like in the downswing, it was right at the top, he sort of yells,” Fish said on The Ryen Russillo Podcast. “I don’t know what he yelled, some sort of bird sound or something. He got me good.”

Fish said his caddy, along with Curry, his caddy and Curry’s father Dell made sure to tell the heckler that it wasn’t appropriate to yell during a player’s swing.

That wasn’t the only time this fan specifically tried to mess with Fish’s game. He yelled at Fish during his warm-up swings on the 18th, too.

“I’m just about to pull the club back, and this is before this guy yelled kind of in my back swing, and he yells out ‘Hey Fish! F--- you, you suck!’ like when no one is talking,” Fish said. “Steph’s like ‘Whoa, dude, what are you doing?’”

Apparently, the unruly patron had bet on Curry to win the tournament, Fish said after his group confronted the fan.

The whole situation rubbed Curry the wrong way, but Fish didn’t want that to ruin the NBA star’s chances of winning the tournament.

“You could tell that Steph, like it actually bothered him to where when we got down to the green and he had gotten on in two and had an eagle putt, I walked by him and I said, ‘Dude, make the putt, don’t worry about it,’” Fish said.

Curry ended doing just that, beating Fish by two points to take home the trophy.
