Here are 10 nominees for this week's California high school softball player of the week

Batters are making contact and pitchers are aiming for the strike zone now at the peak of the California high school softball season. That means voting for this week's player of the week for the Golden State.

Among this week's nominees include one pitcher who recorded more than 30 strikeouts, one batter with back-to-back homes runs plus two batters with impressive single-game performances.

Now we want you, the fans, to vote for the High School on SI California high school softball player of the week.

Voting will end on April 5 at 11:59 p.m. PT. Here are this week's nominations:

Alison Ortega, La Mirada

In three games pitched last week, Ortega went 3-0 in 21 innings pitched. She allowed 11 hits, two walks, two earned runs and struck out 34 batters.

Emry Couch, Tracy

In two games last week, Couch finished with seven hits, three RBIs, one home run, one stolen base and three runs scored. Defensively, she had one putout.

Madeline Valle, Vista

In two games last week, Valle totaled six hits, two doubles, three triples, 10 RBIs, two walks, two stolen bases and seven runs scored. Defensively, she finished perfect with three putouts.

Catalina Medina, Willow Glen

Medina hit home runs in back-to-back games last week. She finished with four hits, two doubles, two RBIs, one walk, one stolen base and five runs scored. Defensively, she had three putouts.

Malliah Foster, Marin Catholic

In three games pitched last week, Foster pitched 20 innings and allowed nine hits, two earned runs, seven walks and struck out 28 batters.

Riley McAndrew, Millikan

In a 9-0 win over Woodrow Wilson, McAndrew went 3-for-4 with one triple and two runs scored. Defensively, she pitched six innings and allowed two hits, four walks and struck out six.

Arri Romero, Mater Dei Catholic

In four games last week, Romero pitched 22 innings and allowed 12 hits, one earned run, four walks and struck out 21 batters. Offensively, she finished with three hits, one RBI, one run scored and one walk. Romero also had nine putouts.

Niayli Calvo, Vanden

In three games last week, Calvo tallied seven hits, eight RBIs, two doubles, two home runs, one walk and seven runs scored. Defensively, she had seven putouts and two assists.

Ava Acosta, California

In a 16-13 8-inning win over Whittier Christian , Acosta went 3-for-4 with two doubles, four RBIs, one walk and two runs scored. Defensively, she had four putouts, one double play and one assist.

Darla Sanchez, Marquez

In two games pitched last week, Sanchez pitched 10 innings and allowed seven hits, six walks, two earned runs and struck out 21 batters. Offensively, she tallied five hits, six RBIs, three doubles, was walked once and three runs scored.

Edith Noriega is an award-winning sports journalist who came to the Seattle area after three years in Oregon with the Eugene Register-Guard and its sister newspaper, Salem Statesman Journal, where her focus was high schools and local colleges. Noriega previously covered high schools with the Southern California News Group. She also worked as a Tokyo Olympic Games researcher for NBC Sports, focusing on baseball and softball. She is a proud two-time graduate of Arizona State University’s Cronkite School and Riverside City College. She’s also a member of the National Association of Hispanic Journalists. When not writing, she enjoys playing tennis, yoga, concerts and is currently reading “The Last of His Kind: Clayton Kershaw.” She began contributing to High School On SI in 2025.
