Hill-Murray defeats Edina in Minnesota High School Class 2A Girls Hockey Semifinals: Live Score Recap (2/20)

ST. PAUL — The No. 1 Hill-Murray Pioneers (25-3-1) defeated the No. 4 Edina Hornets (21-5-3) 3-2 in the 2026 MSHSL Class 2A girls hockey state tournament semifinals on Friday at Grand Casino Arena.
The Pioneers had a 2-1 lead disappear in the third period when Edina senior Lorelai Nelson skated around freshman goalie Piper Tam to tie the game. Hill-Murray controlled much of the first two periods, but the Pioneers did not convert on three power plays, so the Hornets gained momentum with each penalty kill to eventually tie the game.
Eight minutes later, on another power play, Hill-Murray junior forward Emily Pohl punched in a puck that slipped through Edina goalkeeper Soren Peacock's arms and into the crease. Edina couldn't keep the Pioneer power play contained a fourth time.
"I was really proud of the way we stayed disciplined," Edina head coach Sami Cowger said. "They’re a very skilled hockey team. Their power play is lethal. Up until then, we read them like a book. We played really well. We were blocking shots."
Hill-Murray, a young team, needed to be physical to counter Edina's size. These two programs are familiar with each other, and Hill-Murray head coach John Pohl knew what his team needed to do.
"They’re a bigger, stronger team," John Pohl said. "It’s a gritty win for a group of kids who that's not necessarily their M.O. At the end of the year, you have to play that way. [...] Some very skilled kids found a way to do that."
Hill-Murray will play either No. 2 Centennial/Spring Lake Park or No. 3 Holy Family Catholic in the state title game on Saturday.
