Muhammad Ali
Four hours after exhausting his final appeal to refuse to enter the draft on religious grounds, Muhammad Ali was stripped of his boxing title. He was later sentenced to five years in prison for draft evasion.
Hank Aaron
Hank Aaron earned his first hit off of Gaylord Perry in seven years to become the third member of the 600 career home runs club. Upon his retirement, Aaron was the leading slugger of all time.
Billy Martin
Billy Martin was named the manager of the New York Yankees for the fourth time.
Baltimore Orioles
The Baltimore Orioles lost for the 21st consecutive time. It was the longest streak to start a season in major league baseball. The Orioles fired manager Cal Ripken Sr. six games into the streak, but replacement Frank Robinson didn't have much more success: The O's finished the season a dismal 54-107.
Boston Celtics
The Boston Celtics score the most points in a playoff game, beating the New York Knicks, 157-128. Eight Celtics, led by Kevin McHale with 31 points, scored in double figures as Boston jumped to a 2-0 series lead.
