During a meet between British AAA and Oxford University at Iffley Road Track in Oxford, British runner Roger Bannister broke the four minute mile with a time of three minutes, 59.4 seconds.
Los Angeles Lakers
The Los Angeles Lakers convert 57 of 94 field goal attempts in a 135-113 Game 6 victory over New York in the NBA Finals. The Knicks, however, come back and win Game 7 to capture their first championship.
Affirmed
At the 104th Kentucky Derby, Steve Cauthen rides Affirmed to victory in 2:01.2. The horse would go on to win the Triple Crown.
Tom Heinsohn
NBA legends Tommy Heinsohn (pictured), Billy Cunningham and Red Holzman are among six men inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.
Lenny Dykstra and Darren Daulton
On the way home from teammate John Kruk's bachelor party, Lenny Dykstra (left) slams his sports car into two trees. The accident gives the Phillies OF three broken ribs, a fractured collarbone and a broken bone beneath his right eye. Darren Daulton, who was also in the car, suffers a scratched left cornea and a fractured left eye socket.
Shaquille O'Neal
Orlando center Shaquille O'Neal is named the NBA Rookie of the Year after averaging 23.4 points (eighth in the NBA), 13.9 rebounds (second) and 3.53 blocks per game (second), leading the Magic (41-41) to an improvement of 20 wins over the previous season.
