With "impeccable mechanics," why is Stephen Strasburg hurting? "Chances are, it's nothing severe," said a major league medical source who has not worked with Strasburg but is familiar with his circumstances. "A guy that valuable, they might say, 'Wait a minute, hold it.' A regular guy, you give him some anti-inflammatory, have him throw a side in two days and get him out there. This guy, you might wait a month or so." ... The larger concern is what might be causing Strasburg, noted for impeccable mechanics, to suffer the inflammation. The biggest worry is the strain of throwing in the upper 90s, no matter how sound a pitcher's form. "Obviously, there's a reason for this," said the source. "Is he fatigued? There's a lot possible reasons. They are going to have to figure out why he is tight. There's no question it's a red flag." (Washington Post)Comment
Umenyiora's hip a concern for Big Blue
Osi Umenyiora and the Giants will hope his hip holds up without surgery. Umenyiora, according to a published report, earlier in July sought a second opinion and visited the Steadman Clinic in Vail, Colo. to see Dr. Marc Philippon, a hip specialist who operated on Alex Rodriguez, and that Philippon's recommendation was to have surgery to repair the damage still present from the torn hip flexor that forced Umenyiora back in 2006 to miss five games. ... Before traveling to Colorado, Umenyiora conferred with the Giants medical staff and, according to a source, was told he could play with the hip issue by managing it the way he has the past few years. Any surgery can wait and there is no risk of further injury. The source also indicated no surgery was ever scheduled. (New York Post)Comment
Gilbert's arm an upgrade for Longhorns
Rest easy, Longhorns fans. Quarterback Garrett Gilbert is not someone to worry about. This may be his first year starting on the big stage, but when he took over at the national championship game last January, he wowed the nation and things can only go up from there. "We didn't know what would happen to (Gilbert) after the national championship game," Mack Brown said. "He walked right out of there and went back to work. Not much bothers Garrett. He is very confident and level headed. He's got a great presence around him. When he walks in the room, all the kids look and they know he's there."
